ladies and gentlemen: my topic is honesty. as a correspondent of the qingdao morning news, i visited dr. james gilman, the president of the international committee for marco polo studies in england. in this picture, this is james, and this is me and we are looking at a dragonsquo;s tooth. this is a true story. /chuzhong/chusan/ 65 years ago, james lived in qingdao. then he was only 5 years old. he often visited the aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there, which he thought was a dragon. he was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted one to keep as a treasure. in the late 1930s, when the japanese occupied qingdao, his family had to leave. on his last day in qingdao, he ran to the aquarium and pulled out one of the teeth from the dragonsquo;s mouth. he kept the tooth for the next 65 years, but the feeling of guilt at having stolen it was there in the background all through his life. it was always on his conscience, and the feeling intensified as he became older. finally he decided to put right his childish error. in 2019, he visited qingdao and returned it to the aquarium with his sincere apologies. he received a warm welcome. when james visited qingdao, i accompanied him all the time and reported on his visit. i was deeply touched by his honesty. it has taught me a lot. i think to err is human. the important thing is to have the courage to admit and correct onesquo;s error. honesty is a vital quality of human behaviour. so we should try to keep an honest mind in everything we say and do. i would like to say to all of my friends: letsquo;s be honest people of good moral character. thank you.

回顾上个学期，我们播种过希望，也收获了累累硕果，同学们在各项活动中取得了不错的成绩。今天是开学第一天，我们已经惊喜地看到，全体师生都在以崭新的面貌，饱满的热情，积极的态度，投入到新的学期的工作、学习中来了。下面我提五点希望，和全校师生共勉：
第一、要做一个有责任感的人。一名出色人才必须具备四种品质：对国家对社会对家庭有责任感，对学习和工作有进取精神，对他人有竞争更有团队合作精神，对自己有否定和超越的态度。这四种品质的核心就是责任感，对我们学生来说，勤奋学习、刻苦锻炼是你对自己的责任，遵守校纪校规，遵守社会公德就是你对学校、对社会的责任，孝敬父母、尊敬长辈，就是你对家庭的责任，爱护公物、讲究卫生、关心集体就是你对班级的责任，如果没有了责任感，就不会有团结向上的班集体、整洁优美的学习环境，就不会有稳定的社会秩序，所以希望同学们要以对国家、对学校、对班级、对家庭、对人生的责任感，按照中学生日常行为规范来严格要求自己，努力修炼自己的思想和学业。只有这样，才能在未来的社会中有立足之地，才能在发展自己的同时促进社会发展，实现自己人生价值。
第二、要做一个有理想的人。孔子说过，凡事预则立。每个同学都要给自己定出一个明确的目标，有一个伟大的人生理想。如果你没有理想，没有目标，每天庸庸碌碌，从此停止进步，那未来你一辈子的日子堆积起来将永远是一堆琐碎。
所以，我希望所有的同学能把自己每天平凡的日子堆砌成伟大的人生，这样我们一定能变成一个伟大的生命。
第三、养成良好的习惯。良好的习惯是一个人成才的基础，对幸福的人生起到奠基作用，希望同学们时刻不忘习惯的养成，自觉遵守《中小学生守则》、《中学生日常行为规范》。在学校里，多数是小事，但又没有小事。比如：坚决不带零食进校，进校就进入学习状态，不随地吐痰，不乱扔废弃物，弯腰捡起一张纸屑，听到小预备铃声就立即进教室，并迅速安静下来，摆放好学习用品等……事情都很小，但都关系到同学们良好习惯的养成，对于同学们的品行而言，显然又是一件大事。
我记得有句话叫吃亏就是沾便宜。希望大家养成爱劳动的习惯。本学期，学校将以卫生和文明两项工作为突破口，工作重点就是检查、督促同学们从身边小事做起，说文明话、行文明事、做文明人，禁止在校园内吃零食;全体师生一起搜索一个陋习，丢掉一个恶习，文明礼仪前进一大步;管理好校园、教室、花坛卫生，抓好校园、班级文化建设，切实形成文明、自律的学习和生活氛围。
第四、勤奋学习，如果把学生这个词名词解释的话，学生就是学习生东西的人，东西会了熟了就不用学了，学习新东西是我们的主要任务，知识的丰富，技能的提高，品格的养成都离不开学习。
有一个故事说，能够到达金字塔顶端的只有两种动物，一是雄鹰，靠自己的天赋和翅膀飞了上去，但是，全国雄鹰式的人物又有多少呢而有另外一种动物，也到了金字塔的顶端。那就是蜗牛。蜗牛肯定只能是爬上去。从低下爬到上面可能要一个月、两个月，甚至一年、两年。在金字塔顶端，人们确实找到了蜗牛的痕迹。我相信蜗牛绝对不会一帆风顺地爬上去，一定会掉下来、再爬、掉下来、再爬。
但是，同学们所要知道的是，蜗牛只要爬到金字塔顶端，它眼中所看到的世界，它收获的成就，跟雄鹰是一模一样的。人不要跟别人比，要跟自己比。跟别人比，会使得自己永远都不快乐。跟自己比，看到自己每天都在进步，你会很快乐。要每天多努力一些，比别人多努力一个小时。

第五、珍爱生命，树立安全意识。教育无小事，安全大于天。我们要高度关注自己的生命，对自己负责，对父母负责，对社会负责。同学们一定要听从老师的教导，上楼、下楼、出操、课间活动，上学、放学等都要把安全放在第一位，绝不能开展危险性游戏，更要密切地与老师联系，发现问题及时把情况告知学校或班主任，提高自己的安全防范能力。同时要遵守交通规则，讲究饮食卫生，时时刻刻切实把安全放在第一位。

needless to say, one of the biggest opportunities given to china is the 2019 olympic games. till now, we have used two sevenths of the preparation time. how much changes have you seen? new roads, new subway lines, public-exercising equipments with beautiful colors, large blocks of grass fields, and also lots of modern gyms which are under construction.
other than those, there are even more good effects brought to us by the olympic games that cannot be seen directly. for example, more and more people will get to know china. isquo;m sure the mysterious chinese culture will attract them strongly. and the games will also do good to the economy and environment, for it is gaining the attention of foreign investors and the awareness of environmental protection is being strengthened. what is more, olympic games give a unique opportunity to inspire and educate a new generation of chinese youth with the olympic values and the olympic spirit. now that we have seen so many advances, could you even imagine us losing the holding rights?
