相传在很久以前，有个打柴的青年叫万年，他看到当时的节令很乱，决心把节令定准。一天，他上山打柴，忽然从移动的树影中得到启发，回到家里，他设计一个专门测量日影长短的“日晷仪”。可是当出现云阴雨雾天气时怎么办呢?后来他看到崖上的泉水很有节奏地往下滴，灵机一动，做了一个五层漏壶，用漏水的方法来计时。慢慢地他发现，每隔三百六十五天，天时的长短就会重复一次，最短的一天是在冬至。
万年带着自制的日晷仪和漏水器朝见天子，讲解了冬至点，日月运行的周期。天子听后，感到万年说的很有道理，就把万年留下来制历，并在天坛前筑起了日晷仪，过了一段时间，天子派节令官阿衡去了解万年制历的情况。万年拿出自己制作的草历说：“日出日落三百六，周而复始从头来，草木荣枯分四季，一岁月有十二圆”。阿衡十分嫉妒万年的才能，害怕万年得到天子的重用，于是收买刺客刺伤了万年。天子知道后大怒，处死了阿衡，并亲自看望万年。万年指着申星说：“现在申星追上了蚕百星，星家复原，子时夜义，旧岁已完，时又始春，希望天子定个节吧。”“春为岁首，就为春节吧。”天子说。从此，春节的习俗流传至今。
